Day 7 of 100

Staying in Touch
.
Gbenga ‘guza’ Adewumi thought he had heard the last of and from me when I existed the company we both worked for.
.
He thought very wrong😊, because really who do I call when I need to do an explainer video for www.ournuptialches
t.com.

See video here: https://www.facebook.com/anu.sanya.3/videos/10157455191591181/

Sometimes our colleagues become what we need for future advancement. I stay grateful to those I can call on when I need a thing to two. (Even though some are simply tired of my harassment😉😉).

Day 4 of 100

I would be grateful to get an answer to this question.

My conversation with someone left me in thoughts about what it really means to have a community or be part of a community.

Does it mean people who are your friends, people who are like you or people who have a common goal like yours?

The timing would never be Perfect

I love the experiences that comes with exploring new cities or just simply having engaging conversations with people of very diverse background. I find it totally exciting.

I put a hold on it during and after “adult education” waiting for the perfect time. Largely trying to get the wallet ready.

IMG_8346

That perfect time never showed up and still hasn’t. Decided I was going to resume anyway. Started with my birthday this year and again when Onyekachi Eke came to my side of the world.

The perfect timing would meet me along the way.

The answer to what you need is outside.

This one is a tough pill for me to swallow but yesterday night highlighted the truthfulness in it. I spent 3 hours in the company of women in technology – Programmers/Developers, founders, Data Analyst, Product Owners, Tech Students etc.

The time for mingling came and I found myself engaging with women who had the answers or contacts to those doors I have been knocking at for the past many months. Conversations didn’t last up to 5 mins with these individuals and contacts got exchanged with a firm promise to get things moving.

Goodness🙄

I am such a homebody. But clearly “outside” is where it all happens.

The people you are surrounded with.

Anurika Azubuike was checking in on me and I shared my frustrations of how things don’t seem to be progressing. This woman just allowed me to rant and went on to give her feedback that allowed me to self reflect. “Madam you can’t wallow in self pity, if life is not giving you want you want, don’t sit down waiting for it to happen, HAPPEN TO LIFE!

I guess my conscious effort I have made over the years to surround myself with individuals who do not play pity party keeps paying off.

I am afraid. Very much so because the next 100 days is a massive move from my very very comfortable zone but at this point I need to do it afraid.

Touring the Kingdom of Fife

Every year before the Adult education life, I usually  chose a new country to visit on my vacation days. But life after Adult education has humbled me finance wise (story for another day maybe) so I decided to do birthday celebration a tad different. Resume exploring new places.

2018-01-14 10.52.00

One of those days in church when you are asked to turn to your neighbour and introduce yourselves, my seat partner happened to be a tour guide who worked for Rabbies Tour Company  and he recommended their one day tour to St Andrews and the Fishing Villages.

Thanks Graham

This is Eric who was our Driver/Tour Guide. He was born in one of the towns in the Kingdom of fife. He mentioned the town but I was busy replying to birthday message. #error20190702_164757

So we kicked off from the city of Edinburgh of course.

I have passed by this Castle a thousand and one times but I didn’t know  the castle stands upon the plug of an extinct volcano, which is estimated to have risen about 350 million years ago during the lower Carboniferous period.

A bit of Caveat – My photography skills did not do justice to the beautiful places. Best you see them yourself.

So on we went through the Forth bridge. It is considered as a symbol of Scotland, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.20190702_100051

There is a new one known as the Queensferry crossing, an architectural masterpiece!

I took this picture off Google.  But this is what it looks like. Related image

We passed by a number of towns with Eric sharing some historical facts about each of them. Our first picture taking stop was in the Fishing town of Anstruther, a small coastal resort town. Very Popular for  its award-winning fish and chips.

2019-07-02 11.34.462019-07-02 11.34.09It was a 30 mins stop and I was on the phone a lot instead of enjoying the sights and taking pictures. I need to go back there really.

Off we went through more towns and a 3 hour stop in St Andrews!

The Cathedral of St Andrew (often referred to as St Andrews Cathedral) is a ruined Roman Catholic cathedral in St Andrews. It was built in 1158 and became the centre of the Medieval Catholic Church in Scotland.

20190702_124423

In June 1559 during the reformation, a Protestant mob incited by the preaching of John Knox ransacked the Cathedral, the interior of the building was destroyed. The Cathedral fell into decline following the attack and became a source of building material for the town. By 1561 it had been abandoned and left to fall into ruin

After walking for a bit, I stumbled on this Gelato parlour, but fiftfam said no so I walked on. I went to see other places and walked back  the same way. My birthday said you only celebrate your birth once a year plus YOLO! so  in I went. Glad I did.

Its an  100 years and four generations store that was established in 1908, by Bennett Jannetta. 2019 here I am having a taste from many years ago. It was realllllllly good.

20190702_134120.jpg

Below is St Andrews University. The third oldest university in the English-speaking world and the oldest in Scotland. According to some rankings, it is ranked as the third best university in the United Kingdom, plus this is the University Prince William and Kate Middleton met.

I can almost guess why the royal choose this school, well at least one of the reasons. The average Scot is generally not overly excited about the Royals. While they respect them and what they stand for, they scots man/woman would treat them as normal when walking on the street.

Eric said the same thing.

20190702_131306.jpg

As you can imagine it is a town  highly populated by students  but they were on the summer  break,  it was pretty much packed with tourists like myself.

WhatsApp Image 2019-07-06 at 13.28.00.jpeg

The town Center or if you may, the High Street…….well thats a stretch but beautiful place still.20190702_133247.jpg
For golfers this place is the pinnacle of a visit to St Andrews. 20190702_140736.jpg

St Andrews Links is regarded as the “Home of Golf”. It has one of the oldest courses in the world, where the game has been played since the 15th century.

There are seven public golf courses; the Balgove, Eden, Jubilee, Strathtyrum, New, the Old Course (which is widely considered one of the finest, and certainly the most famous and traditional course in the world), and The Castle Course, sited on the cliffs a mile to the east of St Andrews. Again my picture taking skills does not do justice to it.

PS – Almost every town in Scotland has a golf course.

Image result for st andrews linksI took this picture off Google so you have a better appreciation of it.

The golf course is just by the coast line and right beside a small beach. I went on one of the rocks to take these pictures .

I sent my mom the picture below and she said why I was looking like someone who is looking unto the heavens for help. She is correct though, I was.20190702_142946.jpg

Our last stop was in Falkland. A very small village with a population size of less than 2,000.

20190702_16401920190702_160433

This palace in Falkland has some very interesting story about its Queen (Mary Queen of Scots) from many years ago. Summary – A beautiful girl child born and had to be raised in France where she got married and widowed, came back to Falkland married an English Lord who was murdered supposedly by her lover aka her bodyguard.

She married the bodyguard a month after her husband’s death and she was arrested on the grounds of murder. After many months/years in jail she was eventually beheaded.

Their homes look very story book like with an overlooking view of the hills. Beautiful.20190702_15560220190702_155636

I would definitely do this again.

If you find yourself in this side of the world, let’s do this together, it would be much more fun in the company of others.

So did you get my birthday present yet?   You still got a chance. Please send this link (https://ournuptialchest.com/) to that bride and groom that has told you about their wedding.

If you still want to gift me a personal item, I have a wish list. Just ask me for it

Why a Cash Gift Registry?

So………just before we cross over to the new year I am going to share why I created this business of a Cash Gift Registry, OurNuptialChest.com and some background jist (#wink) to some of the features launched in November.

So, my brother got married in 2013 to an absolutely wonderful woman (seriously she is a great human), and for some reason I still cant explain till date why all of their wedding gifts ended up in my house.

WhatsApp Image 2018-12-04 at 01.16.30

Five years after, some of the items still remain unwanted. Not that they don’t appreciate the gifts but they are simply not useful to them. So I got thinking, how about if they had received the cash instead and used the cash received for items they truly wanted as gifts? Say for example down payment for a car, or a house, or an all expense paid honeymoon experience or investments for the future.

A combination of the ideation and my experience within the digital space gave birth to Ournuptialchest.com   – a technology platform that provides access to gifting cash to brides & grooms to-be  towards whatever big ticket item they want.

1024x1024I tried out the idea using my friend’s wedding friend (thanks RnR for being my Guinea Pig) and that began the journey of the existence of the wedding registry for cash gift only.

Other sources validated my idea:  awakening of couples and industry experts to the need for a service like mine:

Twitter convo

Twitter Convo 2

As months went on and I received feedback (directly and from market trends) a couple of changes were made. Some with  back stories to them. Let me share:

Receive Cash Gift from across  globe: This was already there but limited to the Nigerian Niara only. There is now the option of  receiving the cash gift in American Dollars or British Pounds. This was an opportunity that presented itself. I simply grabbed it.

A Private Chest:  My Friends would laugh and say they can already tell why I did this. I have always been known to be the coded one. I think I have been afraid of my Village people too much. I love the opportunity the internet brings but I also have a fierce believe (to be honest, not sure where it stems from) in keeping everything non career and business related off the internet. For this reason plus the market trend of Celebrities keeping their family life private, we created a feature that allows you to create a chest with a password generated that is totally off the net but accessible  on the website to the individuals you share the link and password with only.  Very ideal for Celebrities and highly placed individuals who want to keep the wedding and the details private. And Coded private persons like myself.

Keys-icon

Service Fee Paid by the “Gifters”: Is there a word like Gifter? Not sure but hopefully you got the point. This came from some feedback I got. Couples want to have the gift all to themselves. Nothing personal but just as they would have received the boxed items (being in the storage for many years after is irrelevant) without having to pay fees, they would like to receive 100% of the funds gifted to them. That means we pass on the cost to the friends and family giving. Lets see it as the cost associated with going to the store or spending time online to find the perfect gift for the couple.

Cupid Story: Now this one is all me. I blame the many hours of hiding around the house reading one of my numerous Mills and Boons books. I just love “Love Stories” , Boy sees girl across the room, Girl has also noticed boy but fakes ignorance, boy approaches girl and she dismisses him while hoping he pursues her……etc. I guess I just love the drama and the diversity of the stories. Some not so dramatic but some very much so. For the couples creating a chest, it is more about sharing that special moment cupid played a fast one with friends and family. Especially friends who you have met when your significant other was already in your life.

cupid

Gift History: Transparency is everything where a service related to money is concerned. Our Nuptial Chest is not any different. It is important for couples with a chest on the site see every penny, as it comes (time , date, amount, name  of the giver and contact). It is important to me every couple is assured every transaction is visible to them.

E-Invite/Save the Date: Not sure about you but I cringe when I receive wedding invite over text message or whatzapp message. For me it just says “you are one of the many we have invited to our special day.  You are just a number If you are there or not”. I know I might be taking it a tad overboard #coversface.  Now when we send an E-invite we make it beautiful. When you create a chest on the site (Private or Public) your friends get to read up on your cupid story, see the wedding date, venue and time, a message from you to them and of course the tab that gives them the access to gifting cash.

e-invite

There are a lot more features I would like to add on but one day at a time…..

The journey so far has been “interesting”. Some days I think “Anu, what have you gotten yourself into” and of course other days when there is some level of success I get excited and I get a new zest of energy to keep going. But one thing is sure, I am in for the long hurl. Everyday I would “show up” until OurNuptialChest become the must have for most bride and groom to be.

On a final note, I think (I am seriously thinking) I might need a Tech Partner. Not employee but Partner. The Tech Partner does all the techie stuff and I do all the non techie stuff. You game or know anyone?

You are here so let me tell you about the Cash Gift Registry for newlyweds. Our Nuptial  chest  is helping every couple receive cash gifts from their friends/family. If you are getting married or know someone who is, then send  them over to OurNuptialChest!

I didn’t go back to school for the Degree.

My headline is not a click bait. I truly didn’t.

A few months ago I finished my last paper for my MBA program.  O boy! adult education is truly not for small children. Its not really about the school work, its about juggling life’s commitments while studying. All ye my friends who have gone through this and didn’t give me the fine details, I am watching you in massive 3D. #youknowthyselves

A bit of background story. I got an opportunity to go back to school because 30percentclub gave me the chance to take this time out, sponsoring my Tuition 100% for school inclusive of my 2 months all expense exchange studying from the Dubai campus during the year long program. 30percentclub sponsors ladies across the globe into various business schools. As far as I know, somehow I happened to be the first African they have sponsored.  See the list of schools they work with here.

I am walking away from this experience with  many lessons but I would share my top 5:

1. You would think given my exposure I should not be carried away with the definition of people based on what the news dictates.  I am ashamed to say my knowledge of the men from the middle east has been what the media taught me over the years. But in the last one year three men from the middle east (and north Africa) from three different nations turned everything I knew upside down. These men were respectful, accommodating of others view and culture while maintaining/expressing their opinion, no airs just plain humility in most cases.  Is there some truth in what the media presents? Yes but  a few individuals can not in anyway explain the rest of the country!

My lesson: Interact with people first hand before you decide what they are.

Half of my United Nations Class. A very diverse mix.WhatsApp Image 2018-03-14 at 19.52.16

2. Define people as individuals not by the country they are from aka Stereotyping: The country you come from is only a form of identification, explains your culture and sometimes your perspective  to life. It does not define you. If you happen to meet a nasty individual it has nothing to do with their country of origin, that Individual is Nasty not everyone from that country. Se fini.

My number 1 lesson buttresses this. I know better now to meet people and get to KNOW them.

The Formular 1 Team. Thats my story and I am sticking to it! I should have wonWhatsApp Image 2018-08-27 at 16.46.31

3. Have individuals within your network that would call out your nonsense: Towards the end of the course I did something quite unlike me. I was in the mood of “I don’t have time for nonsense today”.  Looking back now, what I had done didn’t show any maturity really. But while everyone hailed me on and called me bold, one person waited two weeks after to call me out during a private conversation and give me a very Polite tongue lashing. (I think this stuck because it was polite yet firm)

Off shoot of the above: Before you respond to a certain situation, spare a few seconds to think about the message you are sending to the witnesses.  My polite tongue lasher said to me “while I understand the reason for your action, the message you sent  to all of us was your unwillingness to work with a diverse, different characters  & Multicultural team”. Like my Nigerian peeps would say “the thing pain me”.

Somehow I think this was my greatest lesson.

I was a clothing  model for a charity event. lawd! Somebody help me be size 12!20180608_152510.jpg

4. Every interaction with others is an  opportunity to build long term relationship. I knew this from years ago but somehow my experience in the last one year buttressed this lesson. 80% of the time, to make that major stride in business, career etc we need the network of people we know or persons that know us. Make every interaction with others count, make it an opportunity to leave a positive impact.

Another offshoot – Respect everyone! Not just the people in authority, I am talking about everyone including the bus driver, the cleaners, the handyman etc. I look back now and I realise some of the greatest help I got was from individuals who held no “important” position.

Girls day out!WhatsApp Image 2018-08-27 at 16.49.00
Nigeria and TaiwanWhatsApp Image 2018-08-27 at 16.50.11

5. Don’t spend too much time focusing on the things that didn’t go right. My experience was not rosy, people let me down, a number of  unfulfilled promise etc but guess what? I choose to leave the Adult Education experience remembering only good stuff and good people.

Final note – Adult education is really not about being the best student in class (if you choose to be there in person), it’s a time to build a network across nations within and outside your class. If you decide to go on an adult education journey, 50% of your time should be for school the remaining 50 for exploring, creating new experiences and meeting new people. Not sure I did so well with the 50% outside of class.

I am grateful for the experience. I am grateful for the interaction and more importantly I am grateful for the new set of individuals I can call friends.

What next? Yep you guessed right, I would be focusing on building Our Nuptial Chest and the next level of my career in the digital space. #Wekeepmoving!

Need Passive Income? Think Digital Asset

We all know the world is a global village aka there are no more boundaries to the opportunities or market size we have access to.

Let me start this with a Caveat. Please do not expect money to start rolling in right from day 1. But if you are ready to put in the required work and you are consistent, it would pay off. Meaning money happens after you do the hard work up front.

I am a case study for this Passive Income drive because I have  a goal to visit the beautiful city of Santorini in Greece as my next vacation spot. Once the passive Income is able to pay for this trip, you shall be seeing pictures of me here:

Santorini-Greece I would advise you  set a goal that would spur you anytime you don’t feel up to getting things done

So lets get on with it;

E-books –

Before you think, “I really have nothing to write about” you are wrong.  It can be a subject that has already been written about but guess what your perspective brings a difference to it. No one else could have lived your own life experience and that brings a newness to the subject.

I am going to use an example of my Friend, Anurika Azubuike. She who wrote a book “CUSTOMER ATTRACTION: How to Attract and keep more paying customers in Business”  while working  a  9-5 job as a Marketing & Branding consultant. Is the subject new? Nope. Are there are a thousand and one books available on the subject? Yes. But her perspective and experience is different.

So imagine a business owner in Australia or Singapore paying for her e-book while she sleeps in her home in Lagos. Btw – I did read the book and has helped me in my own business.

If you need ideas of what subject to write, here is one below

If you are a home manager, you can consider writing about life as a House manager/Mom/Wife. Trust me your perspective is what makes the difference. No one is looking for perfection. Make it real and witty as you can manage.

Just in case you think your e-book subject is not good enough. Here is a reason you should do a rethink. A book on how to grow a beard selling for £4.87.

growing a beard

You can check out  answerthepublic.com, keywordtool.io  or neilpatel.com to search questions people are seeking answers and possibly tailor your subject to them..

A note of caution – write for the global citizen. Use examples and stories that are relatable to everyone. Except of course you are writing specifically about a particular culture or to a specific audience.

Sell a Course Online:

If you are an expert in a given subject (everyone is really), this could potentially be one for you. Especially if it is an area not many people are experts.

An example would be an animator doing a 5 series 20 mins video of how to create an animated logos. First video would be free and subsequent videos would require you to pay to watch.  All you need do is integrate a payment platform and go to bed. Literally.

Timeless asset because you can edit as updates happen within the industry and people still pay for the content no matter the year. One way to distribute it might be working with a social media influencer to promote it and you share revenue or you simply pay the Influencer a flat fee to promote it.

So many subjects you can teach on! Find the niche and get to work.

Online Consulting:

Let me use this example of my friend (yes I have a diverse bunch as friends). When I found my self  with terrible skin condition because of weather change, I chatted up my friend Ronke Adeoye, aOxford International College of Beauty  trained skin care specialist. She asked me a couple of questions and sent me list of things to buy. They worked magic.  We were in different parts of the world, I didn’t need to call her and she didn’t need to see me.

She is the reason for the caramel like skin you see below. 2018-06-24 10.04.06

But I could chat her up because I know her in person. Imagine if someone had the same problem and had a platform they could reach her for the same consultancy?

So Ronke is launching her Webpage (once its live, I would edit this) where she would share skin care tips, do a couple of video series on skin care and be available for online chat/consultancy. You might be sitting in Lille in France, access her page online and be able to reach out to her in whatever part of the world she finds herself. I see a number of skin care brands working with her in the future.

By the way, she has a 9-5 job as well.

A number of people use Social Media Platforms as the place to document your “CV”. Great choice but that limits it to persons who are social media followers plus social media platforms companies makes changes outside your control. I would say use social media as support channels not the main one.

Online Identity/Resume –

I would call this one prepping for your 15 mins of fame.  That moment when  heaven smiles down on you and you suddenly become an internet sensation.

Before you read on, please go on google and type in your full name. What popped up? Does it represent who you are and what you would like people to associate with your name?

There are thousands of people (me inclusive and recruiters these days), who do a Google search when meeting a new person. I do so I can potentially define areas of common interest or get an insight into your person.

Please be very deliberate about what goes online against your name. If you ever wondered how people get speaking paid gigs, its because they have done a good job of creating that profile of being a thought leader in a subject. (plus the right network of course) I know someone who got a speaking gig in Lagos from Canada (all expense paid) because they saw his online profile and liked what they saw.  Viola!

Start a blog, Write articles on Medium or Quora, be deliberate about your comments and content on social media (it pops up in a Google Search), become a guest editor on an online magazine (loads to choose from). Set up a Google Alert on your name so you get notifications when you name pops up on the internet.

You are potentially opening up yourself to paid speaking engagements, expert opinions on TV shows or write ups.

There are other digital assets you can build but  I personally don’t like overly long articles. Would share more some other time plus my Santorini Pictures. #wink

Technology; An enbaler to Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation is one area within the Digital Eco-system I am very much interested in, and I pay keen attention to conversations and updates around the subject.

This past week I had the opportunity to listen in on two great webinars that took place on the same day.

“How Digital Transformations Succeed” hosted by Harvard Business Review with George Westerman as speaker.

and

“Leading the Digital Transformation” hosted by the Women in Tech Africa Week 2018 – with Teresa Ramos Martin as speaker.

A clear message came through from both sessions; it is easy to believe Digital transformation is all Technology talk but in-fact technology is simply an enabler in the process.  What it is really,  is Transformation (George) or improving process for people – employees & Staff  (Teresa)

Explaining  it from another perspective, the objective or end result of any Digital Transformation is considered a success when there is an improved user experience for an organisation’s customer (sometimes this might be the employees).  Not just by them using the new system but  accepting it as the new way of doing things and embracing it.

What every business needs to be doing is looking at its processes and asking the question of “how do we ensure our customer experience is improved”. It helps not just to retain customers but most definitely it is a key strategy to enhancing competitiveness.

Let me share some examples

If we go by  the  study at MIT  that companies that have embraced digital transformation are 26% more profitable than their peers, I guess it is safe to say every business needs to be embracing new ways of enhancing its customer’s experience using technology.
